Our class was approached by the Department of Informatics and Design to design a new layout for the offices of their faculty. We were briefed by the Dean and he stressed that the faculty office space functions as the heart of the faculty. Seeing that the meeting hub was where important meetings and interactions took place, I regarded it as the heart of the space; placing it centrally with all the other functions such as boardrooms and offices around it.
Just as blood flows to and from the heart, I wanted to create a circulation path so that when people, whether staff, students or visitors, move in the space, they always pass the meeting hub at one stage or another. To enforce the idea of openness all the partitions are constructed from glass with vinyl words to create a semi-private barrier; these words represent the values of the faculty. Also, when entering or exiting the space, you are confronted with student-work displays from the various departments of the faculty.
