Award Winning German Showroom Design

The German Showroom approached our class to come up with new and innovative ways to display their products.  The products are mainly household products ranging from solar panels to bathroom tiles.  These products however are ever-changing as new products which enter the market replaces other products on the floor.
The challenge was to create display stands/units which would be suitable to house any type of product of varying sizes.
My solution was to create a generic modular unit which is combined to offer various layouts according to the type of products to be displayed.  Seeing that the products are mainly household products I wanted  prospective clients to experience these products in a "homely environment."  Thus these modular units were combined to create a semi-closed space; and to create the idea of moving from one space into another.
My design won the 1st prize for the most innovative design.

On Top Prototype design

Once in your bed it's all about comfort.  So why cause discomfort when reaching for you book when you can simply swivel the drawer into your direction?  The small top drawer can be used for smaller "private" items such as money, jewelery and medication to mention but a few.  The middle tray allows for easy access for bigger items such as books.  The large bottom drawer forms the base of the cabinet and provides maximum storage space.  The reason for its square shapes are due to the fact that the bedside cabinet had to have to ability to be flat-packed.  Thus the top drawer fits into the middle tray and the tray into the bottom drawer.
The cabinet is easy to assemble; the parts are simply placed on top of each other and are held in place by means of a central axis system.  Its ability to swivel allows for unlimited placement within the room!

The Rothman Coffee Table

Finiglass approached our class to come up with exciting designs to promote their products.  This design could be any furniture item which you would most likely find in a lounge setting and must have the ability to be flat-packed.  Because Finiglass has such an extensive range of products I wanted to display as much of it as I could and I chose to design a coffee table.
This coffee table consists of 3 various sized panels which overlap each other.  This allows for an interesting arrangement and an overlapping display of colours and/or patterns.  The joints are UV-bonded to create a clean and seamless finish.  When packaged, the panels fit into one another giving them the ability to be flat-packed.
My design scored the best marks in our class.

Adorn Jewelry Store

For our retail project we had to design the interior space and store front of a jewelry store in a mall.  In my opinion jewelry should be regarded as an important purchase due to its value.  For instance, when one purchases a car, he/she is spoiled with a big, red bow and a bottle of champagne to celebrate the big purchase.  So I ask, why can't the purchasing of jewelry be celebrated as well?  That led to the main inspiration of my space......champagne bubbles.
For the main jewelry display cabinets I designed hinged perspex balls to seem as if they are floating in the space.  This gives people the opportunity to move freely around the "bubbles" and to view the jewelry pieces from all angles.  Because the "bubbles" become the feature, I've kept the remainder of the space relatively simple.

The Drawing Room

We were asked to design a cafeteria for the students of the campus building as such facilities weren't provided.  The cafeteria had to be a lightweight structure as it would be constructed on the roof of the second floor.  Architecture, town planning and interior design students share this building and thus it was vital to create a common space that everyone can relate to in order for them to feel welcome.  Seeing that drawing is a basic element we have in common I decided to call my cafeteria the drawing room.  The interior space represents a blank canvas with hand drawn lines on the vertical surfaces which connects the space and the users within.

Beach Cottage

For this project we had to convert a freestanding double garage into a double storey beach cottage.  This exercise focused on a clear utilization of space as well as layout with regards to orientation.  We were also responsible for the construction of the beach cottage which in this case had to be that of a light weight structure.

Faculty Office Space

Our class was approached  by the Department of Informatics and Design to design a new layout for the offices of their faculty.  We were briefed by the Dean and he stressed that the faculty office space functions as the heart of the faculty.  Seeing that the meeting hub was where important meetings and interactions took place, I regarded it as the heart of the space; placing it centrally with all the other functions such as boardrooms and offices around it.
Just as blood flows to and from the heart, I wanted to create a circulation path so that when people, whether staff, students or visitors, move in the space, they always pass the meeting hub at one stage or another.  To enforce the idea of openness all the partitions are constructed from glass with vinyl words to create a semi-private barrier; these words represent the values of the faculty.  Also, when entering or exiting the space, you are confronted with student-work displays from the various departments of the faculty.

The Cape Medley Boutique Hotel - 2nd year

This project was my 2nd endeavour for a computer rendered presentation.  We were asked to convert the interior space of an existing building into a Boutique Hotel with a flavour of Cape Town.  Cape Town is such a vibrant and diverse city and thus I wanted to represent that quality of unity in diversity.  As seen on the plan, I created a colour band extending from the one side of the restaurant into the hotel foyer.  This bands becomes various elements within the space enforcing the idea of unity in diversity.

A Detail Drawing - 2nd year

As part of a construction exercise were asked to draw a basic structure with a foundation, walls, ceiling and roof, and we had to complete the details for the mezzanine level as well as the stairs.

The Pink Tee Apparel Store - 2nd year

For this brief we had the freedom to choose the type of apparel store we wanted to design.  The focus of the exercise was to incorporate a mezzanine level into the space order to grasp the construction thereof.

Water's Edge Restaurant - 2nd year

This was my 1st endeavour for a computer generated presentation.  We were asked to re-design the layout of an existing restaurant and to incorporate a bar areas as well as a buffet display.  This was a layout exercise as well as an opportunity to become acquainted with 3D modeling and computer rendering.
